Caro Prof. Castorani
nel corso dei miei recenti contatti con MIT (per il mio ruolo, ancora controverso, nel MIT russo Skoltech), mi e´stato proposto di attivare una convenzione MIT - ITALY, come daltronde gia´attiva con Politenico di Milano, di Torino, e Univ .di Pisa. Ci sono 3 fondazioni dietro queste convenzioni di ca.200/250 mila dollari anno l´una e mi sono domandato, nonostante il Prof. Castorani non ha alcun ruolo attivo nella campagna elettorale per il prossimo Rettore, magari qualche candidato a Lei vicino (o le associazioni di studenti) puo´ strapparLe la promessa di attivarsi nel senso di cominciare una procedura del genere per sponsorizzare un programma MIT - PoliBA: lancio quindi questa lettera aperta, che spero la trovera´ piacevolmente sorpresa e interessata. Segue lettera della direttrice del Programma MIT Italy, dott. Serenella Sforza. Intendo naturalmente riferirmi ai Suoi ruoli nelle fondazioni bancarie. Si potrebbe fare anche per tutte le Universita´ della Puglia visto che siamo in "guerra" con le Università del Nord secondo Giavazzi!

The Mit-Italy program is a MIT Program that facilitates research and work opportunities abroad for MIT students and faculty.
Every year we send about 50 MIT undergrads and grad students to Italy --mostly at research labs and often in the context of research collaborations between MIT faculty and their Italian hosts.
We also have in depth collaborations with the POLIMI http://web.mit.edu/progettorocca/
and POLITO-- http://web.mit.edu/mitor/ both financially supported by Italian foundations--and Pisa.
The umbrella organization ( MISTI) that coordinates all our country programs--including the one with Russia--has some funds to help launching research collaborations between MIT faculty and their counterparts elsewhere.

Perhaps you may be interested in participating? The MIT-Italy Program has good funding opportunities for projects of this type, but they’re restricted to POLIMI, POLITO and Pisa, so you would have to apply to the global sees funds pool. If your project were selected, we could probably fund MIT students interested in participating. Alternatively, I could probably find other sources of funding to support one or two MIT students working at yopur lab next summer, if their research project were to be approved by a MIT faculty.
I wish we had funding for collaborations with all Italian faculty ( like France or Germany) and still hope it may happen one day…
